Vienna Goes Greener: Removing Asphalt at a Rapid Pace

The Austrian capital is tackling urban heat islands through the “Getting Rid of Asphalt” initiative, transforming concrete surfaces into green oases where people can enjoy their free time. Since 2021, Vienna has launched more than 300 projects across the city. This transformation is complemented by support for cycling and smart urban planning.
Results of the “Getting Rid of Asphalt” Strategy
- 85,488 m² of greened streets and squares
- 3,316 newly planted trees
- 2,745 public seating areas
- 1,952 m² of water features
Vienna’s First Superblock
Where has Vienna turned greener? One example is its first superblock in the 10th district of Favoriten. The streets have been transformed into a calm urban space with limited through traffic, where cars have given way to trees, greenery, and people. The place now features 62 newly planted trees, 94 newly created green spaces, and 17 new seating areas. Thanks to special traffic measures, the superblock is safer for pedestrians, children, and cyclists while also serving as a welcoming “urban living room” for neighbourhood gatherings and leisure activities.
Naschmarkt Becomes Naschpark
Residents wanted a greener public space - and Vienna made their wish come true. An asphalt parking lot next to the famous Naschmarkt market has been transformed into a new public space covering nearly 7,000 m². One of Vienna’s largest urban heat islands has become a green oasis with 70 trees, tens of thousands of flowers, and shaded spots. People can enjoy pergolas, seating areas, and picnic tables. In summer, fountains and water features provide welcome cooling.
