A Smart City to Live In
Vienna follows the principle of digital humanism in its approach to digitalisation. This concept emphasises that technology should serve people and their needs. Digital tools are not an end in themselves, but rather a means of improving the everyday functioning of both residents and public authorities.
The Austrian capital therefore introduces interconnected, user-friendly, and easily accessible digital services. These allow residents to handle administrative matters more quickly, access up-to-date information, and find their way around the city more easily. At the same time, Vienna places strong emphasis on inclusion – designing services so that everyone can use them, regardless of age or technical skills.
Vienna also focuses on developing digital skills among the public. It supports modern education in schools as well as lifelong learning, helping residents adapt to changes in the labour market and society. In addition, the city strengthens digital security and actively combats threats such as disinformation and cyberattacks.
Vienna builds a high-quality digital infrastructure that enables more efficient governance, better planning, and a more sustainable use of resources.
These principles are reflected in specific projects. The BRISE system digitalises the entire building permit process, from application to approval. It works with 3D models and integrates Building Information Modelling (BIM), artificial intelligence, and augmented reality. Smart traffic lights help improve traffic flow by responding to pedestrian movement and real-time traffic conditions, reducing waiting times and carbon emissions. The Smart Trees pilot project introduces sensor-based monitoring of soil moisture and temperature in urban greenery, enabling the precise determination of irrigation amounts and frequency and improving tree health while optimising the use of municipal resources.
Residents are supported daily by the WienBot digital assistant and the Stadt Wien app, which provide access to city information and services in just a few clicks. In addition, the Sag’s Wien app allows residents to easily report issues they encounter in public spaces.
