Vienna by Bike: The City’s Cycle Path Offensive Continues

Since 2021, Vienna has been building a coherent cycling network connecting the city centre with outer districts and recreational areas. It is not only about creating new cycle paths, but also about rethinking urban mobility and redesigning public spaces. The city prioritises safety, green space, and a higher quality of life.

Vienna’s Bicycle Highway
One of Vienna’s most ambitious cycling initiatives is the city’s first bicycle highway, connecting the city centre with the Donaustadt district. The 7 km long Mega-Rad-Highway has linked three districts since 2025. The project also removed 30,000 m² of asphalt and introduced 16,000 m² of green space. The bicycle highway has therefore become a symbol of the “Getting Rid of Asphalt” strategy, which focuses on improving the urban climate and promoting sustainable mobility.
The First Bicycle Street
Another key project of Vienna’s cycling strategy is the city’s first bicycle street, inspired by Dutch models and featuring a clearly marked red surface. In 2025, the city transformed Argentinierstraße into a 1.3 km long shared space for cyclists, pedestrians, and cars. Cyclists have priority here, and the speed limit is set at 30 km/h. The surrounding area was also comprehensively redesigned. The city removed 2,800 m² of asphalt and added green spaces, trees, seating areas, and water features.
