Vienna’s Public Transport Leads the Way: Green Light for Sustainable Mobility

For more than 120 years, Wiener Linien has been keeping the Austrian capital moving. Every day, it carries 2.47 million passengers. The popularity of public transport in Vienna continues to grow - in 2025 alone, it was used by 903 million passengers. Vienna’s public transport network is the largest in Austria, and the city is continuously modernising it.

Sustainability First
Public transport in Vienna covers 214,000 kilometres every day, while accounting for only 1% of the city’s ecological footprint. Today, 100% of the electricity used comes from renewable sources, and 80% of journeys are emission-free. One metro train can currently replace up to 790 cars. Electric, hydrogen, and combined-technology buses are gradually being introduced on bus routes. The new U5 metro line and the extension of the U2 line will provide an annual capacity of 300 million passengers and save 75,000 tons of CO₂ per year.
Vienna Tries New Approaches
Vienna is testing innovative solutions that could transform everyday mobility. In 2025, it launched the “Öffi-Packerl” pilot project, allowing passengers to deliver parcels to lockers during tram rides. A three-month experiment was also carried out, in which around 50 residents gave up their private cars and travelled by public transport, on foot, by bicycle, or using shared mobility options. The results showed that public and shared mobility is efficient and helps save time, reduce costs, and protect the environment.
